Garmin also announced at EAA AirVenture 2009 in Oshkosh the release of a new iPhone App which provides Pilot MY-CAST weather briefings, flight planning and flight filing services to U.S. and Canadian-based subscribers. No need to worry about data accuracy. The Weather information comes from a direct data feed from the National Weather Service, Environment Canada, and the Federal Aviation Administration. Pilots can create routes and see the weather in relation to their planned flight path. The weather part include features such as NEXRAD, METARs and TAFs displayed in text and graphic formats, moving weather maps, lightning data, SIGMETs, AIRMETs, PIREPs, visible and infrared satellite loops, textual winds aloft and more. AOPA airport directory information, and NOTAMs are also available.

Garmin Reveals New G500 & G3X Retrofit Flight Display Systems
Garmin announced several new products at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2009 but the most unexpected was the new G500. The G500 avionics suite is a lower-cost version of the G600 display designed specifically for Part 23 Class I and Class II aircrafts, which are defined as single and twin-engine piston and turbine engine aircrafts under 6,000 pounds.

SPOT LLC has just unveiled their next generation satellite GPS messenger. This new version offers advanced capabilities and feature-rich enhancements. SPOT is the only device of its kind using the GPS satellite network to acquire its coordinates and then to send its location with a link to Google Maps and a pre-programmed message via a commercial satellite network. It can send position, status updates, help and emergency transmissions from almost everywhere on the planet, even where mobile phones can’t receive a signal.
Aircraft manufacturer Cirrus began this year to publicize their concept of “Flying 2.0″ for regional travel needs. Cirrus notes that traditional commercial air travel (Flying 1.0) has became cumbersome, uncomfortable and expensive and has lost its initial charm of yesteryear. Let’s be honest, who hasn’t already experienced long wait hours at the airport for a flight offered by one of the major carriers before one can finally take place onboard and take off towards one’s destination?
